  • I think that this is relatively normal, especially if she's comfortable in her environment. My dog rolls on her back and makes groaning noises, especially after I get home from vacation and she hasn't been inside the house for a long time. I imagine it probably feels good to rub your back on the carpet and it might be similar to how humans cuddle up in their own bed after returning home from a vacation -- just because you're glad to be home! Hope this helps, but if it's not causing problems for her or for your carpet then it's not harmful.
  • Your question is too vague. What kind of situation does she do this in? That kind of behavior is normal in many situations. She may get excited, and thats simply her way of expressing excitement. She may also be irritated...sometimes when my family and I have dinner and we yell at my older dog to go away if she gets too pushy, she will run into the living room, hop on the couch, and start rolling all over it, grunting and groaning because we told her to leave the dining room. If she does it when you have been away, for example coming home from work, she is probably excited to see you. My 2 year old gets very excited when we come home and she used to jump on us, but have since trained her not to do so. So instead, she throws her front onto the floor and sticks her butt high up in the air because she knows she isn't supposed to jump, and she is very excited that we're back, and because she wants to play. This behavior you describe is also common amongst some dogs when their owners come home. If she's hungry, she might be trying to let you know that. Some dogs will bring their food bowl, others will begin to whine, others will follow you...some will exibit the behavior you describe. Try to keep track of the time next time she does it...if it is near dinner time then she may be letting you know she's hungry. She may be itchy. If she doesn't know to turn around and bite the itch on her back, then rolling around on her back may alleviate it for her. The grunting is simply her vocalizing the pleasure of scratching the itch. There are many, many reasons as to why she does it, but in overall answer to your question: Yes, its quite normal. Everything from excitement to boredom to hunger...anything can spark the dog's sudden onset of rolling and groaning. My first dog exhibited that EXACT behavior when we gave her black jelly-beans. She would take it, spit it out on the ground, and roll all over it for almost 15 minutes before eating it. Why? Beats me...but it sure was hysterical to watch. As long as she isn't just suddenly dropping to the ground and looking like she's having convulsions, its a normal occurrence. Try to observe what time she usually does it, and how she reacts if you pet and play with her when she does it.
  • I have been a dog owner for about 15 years now. I have had many different kinds of dogs for long periods of time. I think I understand. She might be "in heat" or in lamens terms, horney. It is probably because other male dogs are around and she needs to have sex with them. It is normal. It is the same concept with cats.
  • I have had 5 dogs. Four females and one male. All of them have done this. We call it the "happy dog dance". They all laid on their backs and rolled around whilst kicking and flailing their legs usually accompanied by grumbles and groans. The question is indeed a bit vague, but I think this is just a normal "I'm happy and excited" response from dogs both male and female. Hope this helps.
  • at our house we call it joy. She also tries to bite her own tail, on the right, then on the left, while on her back. She's pretty old and it makes everyone smile to see her enjoying herself so much. Does it on carpet and grass.
