  • Bolivia is one of the few countries that has two capital cities -- Sucre is home to the judicial branch of the government (making it the constitutional capital), while the president and congress are stationed in La Paz (the administrative capital). By: jose
  • Sucre was the original capital, starting around 1839, and was the home of the Conservative Party. The silver mine owners and landowners near Sucre supported the Conservatives. During the Federal Revolution (1899), the Liberal Party overthrew the Conservatives and attempted to move the capital to La Paz, the center of tin mining which had become a major money-making venue for the country. They succeeded in part - the presidency and congress was moved to La Paz - but Sucre remained the legal capital and the home of the Supreme Court of Justice.
