  • Wedding planners learn their trade in a variety of ways, including plenty of on-the-job training. Still, many professional associations for wedding consultants offer--and require--formal coursework in addition to practical experience.

    Wedding Planners

Wedding planners--also known as wedding consultants, wedding coordinators or bridal consultants--assist engaged couples with budgeting, planning and hosting their wedding. Wedding planners are often self employed, although some may work for hotels or other wedding venues.

    Professional Coursework

There are several professional associations for wedding consultants, such as the Association of Bridal Consultants, Association for Wedding Professionals International and the Association of Certified Wedding Consultants. These groups offer both home-study and in-person training courses, completion of which may be a requirement for association membership. Course topics may include etiquette, marketing and sales and managing wedding budgets.

    Other Coursework

If you plan to be self-employed, courses in bookkeeping and basic business skills are a good idea. If you are going to host your own website, classes in HTML and social media would be a good idea. Many of these classes are available at low cost from your local chamber of commerce, adult education program or community college.

    Practical Training

Some professional associations offer an apprenticeship program, which allows aspiring wedding planners to work under an experienced wedding consultant. Other wedding planners get practical training by working for wedding vendors or in other aspects of event planning.

    Ongoing Education

Experienced wedding consultants can benefit from courses and seminars on wedding trends, destination weddings, new tax rules and marketing techniques.
