If you have ever committed a crime (murder, theft, rape, etc.), are you absolved from the responsibility of what you did by ceasing to do it any more? Can you redeem yourself merely by virtue of not committing that crime any more? Why or why not?

Naw, I think that the only thing that can cleanse that is a long jail sentence

Ceasing your crime is not redemption. You must take ownership and responsibility for your crime, understand the damage you have done, be truly remorseful, and rid yourself of the desire to ever repeat.

I would imagine it depends upon the severity of the crime. And upon those who have it within themselves to forgive you your trespass. Such as the ones you injured. After all, my children have committed many "sins'. They can demonstrate to me that they've grown up by not doing such silly things anymore.
