My theory is that geography forces people to acknowledge that there is a whole world out there and not all of it revolves around them. For instance, many people think that the US is the only country in the world that matters and overlooks the fact that we are only about 4% of the world population. Of course, that's just a theory.

Usually because they are not that great at it. Been a while since college but I still have globes and maps of the world that still interest me. I was horrible with the Geography of the United States mainly because it didn't interest me as much as Europe or even Central America and the varied climates and laguages spoken.
