It's happened a bit in some stories, it's a great way to twist things around from the "perfect ending". I personally think it's great!

I think I would be shocked, but it wouldn't necessarily bother me if the death made sense. When an author kills any important character, it has a shock factor. Unexpected death is always jarring. The question is very interesting because I cannot remember any book that killed the main character. Either my choice of reading is narrow or my memory is terrible.

I would think the author wrote a book and not a happy ending movie. It's ok if the main character dies.
-
Happens all the time in H.P. Lovecraft's stories. The protagonist in one of my novels dies. Oh yeah, spoiler alert.
-
I would be very sad, getting involved in a book often translates to caring about the main character and caring for their well being. It would make me really sad.
-
If it was Micheal Myers I would be happy:)
-
I would think the main character in the book died at the end.
-
I have often ended up crying when that happens.
-
I would think the person never existed in the first place from now on :)
-
Depends on the book. Jean Valjean died at the end of Les Miserables. It's a wonderful book if you skip over the longer political bits.
-
I would probably throw the book across the room
-
You mean like The Diary of Anne Frank? Yeah, it happens from time to time. You don't get out of Real Life without dying, either.
-
I prefer happy endings.
-
Happened to Grand Admiral Thrawn grr in the Star Wars "Thrawn Trilogy"; unacceptable, I am filing a complaint...
-
I would think there isnt going to be a sequel.
-
Depends on the character and the story line.
-
i think it depends that character is bad or good in book or for twist dead of character is suits then i dont mind in it.
-
I'd think "was there any way the writer could have kept the character alive?"
-
cool i like things to change up sometimes...+5.
-
It's happened before. It was kind of depressing, I didn't see it coming, but it was necessary in that case, I believe.
-
Ugh what a let down!
-
That would be bizzare if it was written in first person! LOL!
-
If the story benefits from it then I am all for it...
-
If it was a good/lovable character, I would be devastated!
-
I've read quite a few books like that. It's sometimes sad, sometimes a relief, depending on the story and character.
-
I would be sad, and wouldn't expect that. Noooooooo!
