Well, what do you think Baby cakes are made of?
-
That's a wonderful question! You know how many babies are murdered every year, just to make 10 gallons of BABY OIL?
-
I suppose the cake is named after the hot beverage that is usually served with the "cake." It's a cake to have with coffee. I really liked the answer about "baby cakes."

Good question; it's a rip off! Can't get my coffee fix!!! I guess it was just really meant to go with coffee but I'm tempted to make one up that has it in it. :)

We live in a culture that is articially flavored.

... serve the cake WITH coffee ... ... if vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?

Speak for yourself. When I make coffee cake I put coffee in it. When I make cherry cake I put cherries in it. When I make lemon cake I put lemon in it and when I make hash cakes I sure as hell put hash in it. You just need to demand better standards.

Coffee cake used to have coffee in it, but when they started mass manufacturing the coffee to sell on supermarket shelves, the inclusion of coffee made it too costly for the average person pocket. Thus, the manufacturers got rid of it and put in more sugar. Heard it on "Unwrapped" on the Food Network.

It's a delicious and perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee.
-
Maybe they thought it would taste good with coffee so that's what they decided to name it, LOL! Who knows!
-
The same reason my coffee cup has no coffee in it.

Actually I have a recipe for coffeecake which calls for powdered instant coffee as one of the ingredients. But it is a cake usually not quite as sweet as a regular cake with frosting and thus is suitable to have with your cuppa joe. Hot dogs don't have dogmeat in them either...do they? :)

I think because it's something that tastes good served with coffee.
