• I don't like to begin answering a question with a question, but what difference does it make if the vehicle in the commercial has a fake license plate? If the plates colors match those of the car, I assume it's because there is then no "clash" of colors or design with those of the vehicle. If only rear plates are shown, the commercials may be filmed in a state where only a rear plate is required.
  • I would presume they don't want the plates to stand out, but make the car look better than one with a blank space. Besides, it is illegal to use plates that aren't registered for the car.
  • For one thing, filming those ads is very expensive for the car manufacturers. Fake plates the same color of the car make the car look more color coordinated AND the manufacturers can use the same photos/footage of the cars in every state.
