  • The Operating system is the software "engine" that drives your computer and allows you to do stuff on it. Examples of OS are: Windows Linux Mac
  • In simplest terms--it is the program (actually, a GROUP of programs), when executed, allows the computer to do what it does, be it WINDOWS, MAC, LINUX, etc. Think of the COMPUTER (case/tower) as the shell of an automobile--the OS, or OPERATING SYSTEM, would be the ENGINE of the car. Just like it is possible to place different engines in a car--you can place different OPERATING SYSTEMS in your COMPUTER. (Hopefully, unlike WINDOWS--with far LESS trouble!!!)
  • I guess you could think of the operating system as a specific group of programs that manage and control the hardware for the computer.
