Guilt is only wasted when it is in the form of regret. To regret failing something is useless, but to feel guilty cheating on your wife is very important as a sane human being.

Wasted? More like a mental toxin. Along with shame, it undermines one's self-worth, self-confidence, and self-control...while enabling the manipulation and peer-pressure of others.
