Are you using a electric beater or mixer? That could be the reason.

Try mixing it in using smaller increments. Don't dump the whole thing in at once. And you can always stop adding the powdered sugar whenever you wish, regardless of whether or not you've used the full amount. If it's firm and tastes good, it's ready! You might also make sure you've use the correct amounts of other ingredients. tsp is teaspoon and Tbs is tablespoon...that kind of thing. Not that I've ever mixed those two up as a kid...

Two hints: 1. Always sift powdered sugar! I'm from a humid climate, so we always get lumps in the powdered sugar. It's easier getting rid of lumps in the sugar than trying to make your frosting smooth. 2. Follow the chief's advice - add a little at a time
