It could be some kind of fungi. My dad has what we call "the bad toe," only because it has fungi. So I would go to a doctor and get it checked out, because it could get worse.

responding to lekililina, the testing was done by the lab of the podiatrist's - all three times - who practices at a large metropolitan hospital. That's why it's such a mystery to me. I insisted it be done twice more after the first time just to make sure.
