It could be that you violated laws while making the arrest. Examples may include: undue force, false arrest, illegal means, etc.

Each state with the exception of North Carolina permits citizen arrests if the commission of felony is witnessed by the arresting citizen, or when a citizen is asked to assist in the apprehension of a suspect by police. Anything more and you are subject to state laws concerning holding someone against their will, and civil cases.

It's more likely that the arresting citizen will be later sued by the detainee rather than being arrested by the police.

Sure, if the arrest was unlawful. Know the law before you try to enforce it.
