In 1824, the city was renamed to Monrovia. It became the capital of Liberia July 26th, 1847.

1824, after they changed our beautifully name of Cabo Mesurado! We never did find the Mines of King Salomon! :(

This is an interesting question! I believe it was during the years that President Monroe was in office....in 1824, the city, Cape Mesurado, was renamed Monrovia. It is the only Non_ American city named after a U.S. President....I also believe that he has some influence on the town, but Im not sure exactly... I think he boosted the population.
