I actually wondered the same thing about him when I first saw him. And apparently he's been asked the question many times. According to Seal, the extensive scarring (mainly on his cheeks) was caused by lupus. He had the disease when he was younger (I believe he was around 14) and survived it. Hope this helps :D

Even though Seal was born in Britain, I read from some credible source that he was born to a Nigerian father, who was a yoruba. The father according to the custome of many Yorubas gave his son a "tribal mark" (scaring of the face which distinguish one tribe from another) as a cultural symbol. I am not sure what went wrong, and Seal was finally raised by a Brazilian or so, who estranged him from his real mother: however, the scarring on his face came as his protest to conceal his affiliation to his heritage, or his hatred for those marks which obviously are inflicted disformity, and he took to scrapping the mark which has been given him by his dad for cultural purpose. Myself being a Yoruba, I know how out of place are such marks on children, and would have done anything possible to get them off my face were some given me at birth. Thank God, I was spared!

I've heard that it was tribal scaring- some tribes in Africa do it to their men to signify things when they reach adulthood.

I have heard about the tribal marks story myself but i don't know how true the story is.But if the man says he got the scarring from Lupus, then so be it. I know he's not very proud of being a Nigerian tho, as i have never heard him make mention of his roots(but i may be wrong). I am a great fan of his music, and being a Nigerian myself i am very proud of him. I know his relationship with his mum was not a very close one, but we all have problem with our family from time to time.

This was NOT a ritual or 'tribal marking.' Myths, urban legends and falsities do not need to be spread any further. 'Contrary to popular belief, the scars were caused by a disease called Lupus which Seal suffered from when he was a child. The particular strain from which Seal suffers causes blistering especially around the facial area, which when ruptured cause deep scarring." http://futureloveparadise.co.uk/qna/03scars.html http://www.kidzworld.com/article/7184-the-lowdown-on-lupus

I just saw Seal and his beautiful wife , Heidi , on Oprah , where he told how he was given up at birth to a brithish couple and lived with them untill he was 4 years old . So there is no way he could have been giveb those scars by his tribe or father . He said he went to live with his mother at 4 until he was 6 then with his father until he was 16 . He was surprised on the show by Oprah with his foster sister , tears streamed down his face . He is a wonderful man , husband and father . And singer !! I think he is quite handsome , and his actions make him even more so .

Who cares? Seal has enough self-confidence that when you see him, you do not notice the scars. His incredible personaly shines through. Sonam

Maybe I'm sexist, but would a WOMAN be able to be a celebrity if she had the same extensive scarring on her face?

whatever seal like he thinks or belief but the fact still remains that people will always know one or two things about you no matter how hard you try to hide it. first and foremost he black and i dont think he will be so daft to do a wacko jacko. i once saw a picture of him with his granma back in nigeria in a news paper. well mr seal naija will always be naija although it might not really be where we want it to be but north east west or south home will always be home. if you like you identify with naija but just remember there are great people out there too that are far more greater than you (seal). samuel peter heavy weigth boxer, harry akande accomplished buisnessman, akeem the dream olajuwon, austin jayjay okocha, prof wole soyinka, chinua achebe, chief fernandes infact the list is endless. So think man, and pray that God should rid naija of all the corrupt leaders we have, remember it took america years to get there and ireland some years back was very poor infact there was famine but it is one of the richest countries of the world.

He got Dischoid Lupus Erythematosis (DLE, versus Systemic Lupus) as a child. It causes permanent scarring. It is a lifetime immune system disease, so he will have to monitor it and probably take steroidal or other medication off and on all of his life.

JO JO I don't know what the truth as to what happened to Seal's face, but I doubt it was Lupus. Lupus causes a butterfly shaped rash across the nose and would not cuase, in my opionion, on his face in the pattern he exibits. Also he has a lot of scars on his scap which seem to indicate there was some kind of an accident. I wonder if there could have been a car accident, which could have run his sunglasses into his face as he passed through the windshild and explain the scars on his sclap area. Don't know the answer here, but whatever caused the scars hasn't held him back. He is a lovely man with a lovely family. Look up Lupus butterfly rash for yourself and form your own opionin

Wanna know how Seal got those scars? His father was... a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn't like that. Not. One. Bit. So, Seal watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. Turns to Seal and he says "Why so serious?" Comes at Seal with the knife,"Why so serious?" He sticks the blade in Seal's mouth. "Let’s put a smile on that face!" And... Why so serious?

actually if u look up the lupus butterfly rash like the young lady said it makes alot of sense that this could in fact be the cause if the scars for the simple fact that the scars on his face look to be fairly identical on both sides

While there have long been rumors as to the cause of the scars on his face, they are not the result of a tribal scarification rite. Seal’s appearance is the classic example of a relatively rare condition, discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). Seal has revealed in interviews that he was afflicted with this syndrome as a teen. A condition where the immune cells attack various body tissues, DLE usually affects young people. Intense inflammation develops in the skin, particularly in sun-exposed areas. If not treated aggressively with sun protection and anti-inflammatory medicines, scarring can result. Not only did it cause the cheek scars, but he had significant scalp involvement, causing hair loss. The singer's condition has been in remission for years.

I read it was caused by Lupus.
