Like the expression "third time's the charm" the idea of good fortune being attached to three is a very old one. It predated Jesus ascending on the third day, and probably the ancient belief that saying something thrice gave it extra power. Snipers use the principle to zero in, btw. The first shot show what macro-adjustment is required, the second allows fine-tuning, and the third should hit the bulls-eye.
