I don't think Americans say cream when meaning milk...I just say milk. Cream is cream and milk is milk.

I don't say cream when I mean milk. I say milk when I want milk and cream when I want cream. Usually, the closest to "cream" that I will get is half and half for my coffee. This is half cream and half milk and it is understood that this is what half and half means.
-
Cream is cream, it is normally used in coffee. Milk is milk I normally use it in cereal.

Kai-El, what are you talking about? When I go to the grocery story, I have a choice of whole milk (includes the cream)or various degrees of skim milk, or liquid cream, or half/half (half cream, half milk), or whipped cream. I don't know any of my fellow Americans who call milk cream. When we say cream, we mean cream, and when we say milk, we mean milk.

I say milk for milk and I say cream for the cream part of the milk.

I have never heard of an American, or anybody aking for cream when they want milk. I ask for cream in my coffee, and milk with my cereal. Milk is for drinking and cream is for coffee, at least as far as I know.
-
I think some say light. One time I offer to go to the coffee shop to get coffee for my coworkers. For myself I wanted regular with cream and sugar. One of my coworkers wanted regular light and sweet. When I was writing it down, I wondered if really there was a difference.
-
Never heard of that. Lived here all my life and milk is milk and cream is cream. We don't seem to confuse the two.
-
I say cream when I mean cream (or half & half for coffee) I say milk when I mean milk.

Cream = Cream Milk = Milk, usually reduced-fat (2%); Whole milk (4%) is usually specified as "Whole milk". Lowfat milk = 1% Skim Milk = 1/2% This isn't like crisps vs fries or flats vs apartment; cream vs milk really is the same between the UK and the US.
-
I really don't say cream at all. I think of cream as a half and half type product, much heavier than regular milk.
-
I think you must have the wrong country . . . milk and cream are totally different.

I don't think we say cream much over here unless it is in reference to cheese sometimes and that is just cream cheese. I think we just say milk.
