  • Annually, 7,000 to 8,000 rabid animals are detected in the United States, with more than 90 percent of the cases in wild animals. It seems most of the statistics specific to dogs are reported individually by state. Using the above statistic, I guess you could make a very rough estimate of 700-800 domestic animals in the US contract rabies each year. Coincidentally, there was an excellent article in today's (4-1-08) NY times about rabies.
