When people think others are shallow simply because those people make different lifestyle choices or follow a different belief system...they are the one who is shallow

Emotional and intellectual...hydroplaning. They never go beneath the surface of anything.

i think they do not have much life experience and every is handed to them on a platimum platter.

Sometimes it could be money. It's not the fault of the money itself, (I don't agree it's the 'root of all evil'), but it CAN get to some people and make them feel superior and shallow.

Sometimes it could be fear of letting other people get close.

a combination of a lot of things. Their upbringing, their personality and their response to others all play a roll. It is hard to pin down in any individual as these factors are in different mixes in diferent people. In some cases it may be a symptom of mental illness...but not always.

When people do not endeavor to think critically and out of the box.

shallow people are reactionary. they participate in life, but they do not seek understanding of their place in this world or their effect on others. they observe but they do not truly see... they are about i not we... to swim in deeper waters requires compassion and introspection and reflection...
