What is the probable cause of sudden loss of oil pressure in an older V8 engine?

Two possibilities are: faulty oil pump, catastrophic engine failure.

Check oil level. If low add oil and see if that helps. If not, oil pump could have given out.(usually happens gradually)

If you have an oils pressure gauge it may be a sudden loss of oil. If you just have a "dummy light" the oil level may have just dropped below the level to activate the light.
