The power button does turn the computer off, it just has a safety feature included which means that you have to keep the button depressed for around 10 seconds. It's to protect users from themselves! (you can also disable the power button in Control Panel, but thats a different thread)

Probably on the switch on the wall!

You mean the days before ACPI? Yes, I do. And those were dark times.

Actually there are settings you can change which can turn this on, still. It's just by default it requires you to hold it for ten seconds to actually cause a hard-off instead of a soft-off.

What?!?! You use to be able to turn the computer off? I kept pushing the button and it never went off so I just sit here until it will turn off. Hahaha - Yeah I even have one of those computers still I love my 286 with DOS 5.0 :-P Still use it too.

you mean like just now? hold it down for a few seconds...
-
Mine still does...just hold it down for 5-10 seconds.

That was a looooong time ago. I remember once accidentally bumping it and the whole thing turned off and I lost everything! These 10 seconds buttons work much better in case of accidents. And I love the power backup, too, since we live in an area that always has power outages.
