During the third or fourth month of pregnancy the Punsavana (protection of the fetus) sanskara is performed for the physical growth of the child. The significance of this Sanskar is to invoke divine and good qualities in the child. According to the ancient Shastras, this ritual is performed in the desire for a male child. The reason for expecting male child is believed to be in the belief that it is the male child who carries the Vansha forward. Like the first Sanskar i.e. Garbhadhan, Punsavana Sanskar is also restricted to the family members. www.shreeshaktimandir.org

This is an important Samskara (ritual) among the Hindus to be performed before the baby begins to grow and move in the womb. The word Punsvana occurs in Atharvaveda, where it is used in the literal sense of "giving birth to a male child:. The Punsavana is used for welcoming the great soul. This is also called "Garbharaksha". (protection of the fetus),is performed during fourth month of conception to assure that the infant is not miscarried.
