  • It happens often in CA. We can make a legal right turn against a red light, but that is when the peds are usually crossing. Have to be really careful. 12/21/25

Legal right turn against red light? That is a messed up law because if a vehicle hits a pedestrian crossing the road at the right time, it’s the driver’s fault for the accident.

That's right. It's really dangerous these days with the pedestrian and the driver both distracted by their phones.

      Not good

I go to Nevada pretty often, and they have the same right turn law as CA over there. Reno regularly has pedestrians getting hit by traffic for one reason or another. It's almost always due to distraction, but sometime due to drunk driving too..

It seems that parts of America need to change their laws if they want to keep pedestrians safe but that’s not the case unfortunately.

Here is a tidbit I wasn't aware of; "All 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia allow a right turn on red, unless a sign specifically prohibits it. Why This Is the Case The rule became nationwide after the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975, which pushed states to adopt right on red to save fuel during the 1970s energy crisis. California was the first state to legalize it back in 1939, and others followed over the next decades". The problem has really developed mostly since the advent of the smart phone. Drivers and peds just can't seem to focus on their safety instead of their phones, IMHO.

      That’s unfortunate

I think that we should have that here in certain intersections too. When I'm sitting waiting in a left turn lane and there isn't any traffic to speak of, that would be a nice thing, IMHO.
