  • My knee-jerk reaction is Alexander the Great. Although he, personally and directly, was not very significant (his major conquests were accomplished less than 10 years before his death), the aftermath was centuries of Hellenistic influence throughout most of the huge territory that he conquered. Most of the Middle East was ruled by Greek-speakers for centuries, and Greek became both the Lingua Franca and the "language of academia" of the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean regions.
