  • Kids can be cruel
  • DWW already said the most correct answer. I'd only like to add that, by picking on families that had popular behaviours or situations, bullies can make an excuse to pick on whomever they prefer. It never has really made logical sense. Like: "Oh, you breathe air?" HA HA! FREAK!" Sadly, some of the kids who were picked on the worst were singled out for whatever skills they had. Too smart - bullied, musical prodigy - bullied, does a lot of volunteer work for the community... - bullied. With social media, it's made it even more evident that the worst offenders don't even realize or remember that they do it. I just randomly happened across a post where I friend of mine who was bullied a lot was venting about how much it affected him, and one of the first people to comment on it was one of his bullies, saying how relatable it was, since everyone was equally bullied. Granted, it's probably true that bullies are very often bullied themselves, but it still seemed tonedeaf to respond to an actual person you actually bullied in that sort of way.
  • No idea but I do remember clothing bullying back then to definitely center on attacking Kmart. Right up there with "Where'd you get your driver's license? Sears Catalog???" Kmart wasn't so bad though....remember going there all the time.

  • ??? Must be specific to time and place. Where and when I grew up, nothing of the sort happened. (But, then, I don't recall there being a K-Mart around, either. Sears. Penny's. Montgomery Wards. But not K-Mart.)

I mean: where and when I grew up (60s and 70s western NY and PA), there were no kids making fun of other kids because of where their clothing was purchased, and though K-Mart was a thing, it wasn't as big a thing (at least where I grew up) as it became in later years.

IF you've ever heard stories as the years went on of kids getting bullied for shopping at Kmart, then you're in the right question. Other users who answered the question have touched on the subject by being aware of the bullying that took place.
