  • Wrong is wrong. Police should be held to a higher standard than civilians. In other words, if a police officer given a weapon and a budget cut from tax dollars with a charge to serve and protect public interests and public safety, and they do something that a civilian would receive felony charges for doing, they should have a very clear articulable reason why, or else they should no longer be trusted with that level of responsibility. I don't think anyone trying to add ANDs or BUTs to that had anything other than a political agenda to promote.

Thanks for sharing! People are tired of hearing conjunctions.
  • Sweetie, start with the fact that Blacks are the ones who are being suppressed and have been since slavery. Nobody enslaved whites in the USA. Second All your example shows is that Blacks can be as brutal to members of their own race, to protect their jobs, as whites are. 😏 When you down-home Southern belles learn that, maybe all the races can breathe easier. Racism and stereotypes exists because of people like you, not me. Label jars not people hon. 😌

Thanks for sharing! If black cops can be as brutal to their own race in order to protect their jobs, you are implying the 5 black cops brutalized Tyre Nichols to "prove themselves" to a white higher power. What a way to speak for all black officers.

Those five renegade policemen do not represent all or most Black people, just because you say so. That's what I mean to say. My comment was meant to imply that your answer was completely unaffected by what I said. lol. IOW you missed it entirely.

Before we go making generalizations about "Black people" or "Blacks," why not start with the Memphis police department responsible for this? I think virtually everyone agrees that those five police officers need to be prosecuted. Beyond that, I think that it's thoroughly evident that many police departments around the USA have some sort of systematic issue. An Asian-American man is shot by white policemen, who got exposed planting a gun on the victim after the fact, and yet no trial was ever held. A Somalian immigrant cop shoots a white Australian lady begging for help and never explains why, was convicted, but now puzzlingly walks free. An Asian-American cop shoots a black man for calmly trying to explain that he has a permit to carry a weapon during a traffic stop. A white police officer suffocated a black man for no imminently apparent reason. White police officers snuck into a house to execute a search warrant and awoke a black tenant who was asleep on a couch, and then shot him when he reached for a gun, but the man was unaware the men were police when he was shot to death. I could go on with this list, but what do you think all of these people had in common? They were trained by the Minneapolis police department. Many major cities' police departments have similar stories. Maybe they don't get picked up by the media, but there are a lot of problems with cops following a de facto policy of shooting first and then covering it up after. If we want to solve the problem, we ought to look at how to fix this. Anyone who comes out trying to make this into a racial issue is pushing a political agenda that has nothing to do with solving this problem. If there is some other problem you wish to address that does have to do with race, then I strongly suggest that you define the problem logically in a way that ties it to race if you want to be taken seriously.

Hulk, quote: "Those five renegade policemen do not represent all or most Black people, just because you say so." What in the blue hell are you saying? I am the questioner trying to get to the bottom line. Look what you said in your answer and I quote: "Blacks can be as brutal to members of their own race, to protect their jobs," Blacks don't have to be brutal to their own kind IF they do their job properly. If they are protecting their jobs, it could mean black Oreo cops are abusing of their own kind to be favored by some white racist authority in charge of the police force. Hasn't the Black Lives Matter movement been protesting for years of how racist cops are????????????????????? Quote: "My comment was meant to imply that your answer was completely unaffected by what I said." You seriously need to think again. You stated black cops are protecting their jobs: from whom is what I want to know. Unless you come down here in these comments to clarify, there is something you want to say, but can't say it.

bostjan64, generalizations about black people? In case you didn't know, Answerbag is an opinionated site. Those 5 black cops should not get away with what they did Period No one is arguing that. The question is, white cops in general get labeled as racists when 1 bad apple uses excessive force on a black person. Turn the tables around in which almost everyone in this subject is ignoring, what do you have, 5 black cops who failed to use their required training or 5 black cops who had to prove themselves to a mysterious higher power? Perhaps you can answer for Hulk.

I was referring to Hulks comments, where he's defending "the Blacks" in very broad strokes. Often times, people don't want to be just arbitrarily lumped together with each other like that. In the USA, we have a cops shooting civilians problem. Sometimes the cops are white, sometimes not, often the victim is black, but sometimes not. Solving the problem has to do with changing how people are behaving when we give them authority, either by changing the screening or by changing the training, or, most extreme case, by limiting the tools that they have. Unfortunately, we also have a problem that our political system is extremely partisan and is more interested in scoring points than engaging in problem solving.

bostjan64, do call out people by their names to avoid confusion. The graphic video in the link shows the officers brutally beating Nichols for 3 minutes. 2 officers can be seen holding Nichols down while others kick and punch him. At least one officer uses a baton. We can't say the 5 black cops were racists and neither can we say that every white cop who has used excessive force on a black person is racist as Hulk is making it seem by bringing up slavery. I believe cops, being white, black or any other race who abuse their authority have their problems at home in which they bring along with them.
