  • It wasn't the suits in themselves. It was about the amount of material that was used in making them. The riots took place during WW2 when rationing was being practiced. Wearers of the suits were accused of being unpatriotic and were attacked as a result. It was a big issue back then. Although today, we might view it as "petty", it compares with the racial backlash that takes place whenever a high-profile event occurs such as the George Floyd episode.
