  • Well...at this point we don't know since we can't really trust ANY statement coming from Russia, including and especially official channels. (For example: for WEEKS Putin kept repeating that Russia was NOT going to invade Ukraine and that such claims were purely the product of Western propaganda and intentionally "alarmist" Western news stories.) *** SO: quite frankly, I doubt Russia is going to annex Ukraine (as their current statements suggest is their plan). Why do I doubt this? Because I don't see Russian officials being willing to spend years of themselves and their nation suffering the consequences of the current economic sanctions. *** WHAT SEEMS more likely to me is that Russia will (1) "disappear" current Ukraine government officials (see: the news story about the governor of the second-largest city being "disappeared") (2) install a new, pro-Russia government that pretends to be democratic (but isn't in reality) (3) withdraws its troops once the new government seems to have attained loyalty of military forces. Once Russian troops are withdrawn, Western sanctions will be lifted, and the entire episode should take much less than a year...as opposed to the alternative of annexing Ukraine and living under these sanctions for years to come.
