How long does a typical dentist exam take?
Every dental exam I've ever had has taken no more than 20 minutes. The dentist would do an x-ray, read said x-ray and give recommendations during the end of the visit. I am new in a town so I had to get a new dentist. I knew I had a cavity so I asked for an exam too because I thought that was the normal thing to do. The dentist spent 45 minutes on the exam alone. He measured every tooth. He pricked the inside of my mouth many times and ten measured the amount of blood. He measured my mouth at every angle. They did about 20 x rays. Most exams I have gone two did maybe 2-3 x-rays. He then said I had to go back for him to read the x-ray results and also fix the cavity. I knew I would have to come back for the cavity so that didn't surprise me but I have never had a dentist delay reading the x-rays. So either this guy was milking my insurance company or every other dentist I have been to has phoned it in. Thoughts?

I generally block out about two to two and a half hours. One hour wait after my arrival time. 45 minuets while they clean my teeth. 25 minutes while they X-ray and poke around in my gums. then about 20 minutes for the dentist to come in and do any work required.

Half an hour to an hour, unless something comes up to interrupt the exam. The x-rays take the biggest part of the exam time. Once the dentist gets there for the visual exam, it is just minutes to go. 2/28/26
