  • The English language has the largest vocabulary of all the world's languages. "English has the world’s largest vocabulary, a result of English being an inclusive language that has borrowed words from many other languages and also because it has its origin in two different language sources, Anglo-Saxon and French..." Athabasca University: If English is not Your First Language http://www.athabascau.ca/courses/engl/155/support/if_english_is_not_your_first_language.htm "English is the closest thing today to a universal language. Upwards of 350 million people speak it as their first language, with many more than that using it as a second language. It has the largest vocabulary of any language (550,000 separate entries in Webster's Third New International Dictionary)." http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=512132
  • This is a tricky question. If we take into account only the words in a dictionary, many languages may not even show up in the list. Languages like Mandarin or any Indian languages have so many words that its almost impossible for some one to compile them. Most modern languages, like English, will have small vocabularies and so almost all of the words can be compiled in a few years. My answer to this would be Tamil, which is the oldest language and it is still growing. Its almost impossible to say the number of words in Tamil.
