  • The answer to this question is the same for most great serial killer movies -- Psycho (1960), Deranged (1974), The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) were all based on infamous serial killer Ed Gein, a graverobbing mass murderer. However, since Gein had already been the inspiration for "Psycho", director Tobe Hooper wanted to make Leatherface different somehow. The idea came to him when he was standing in the hardware section of a crowded store, and while thinking of a way to get out through the crowd he spotted the chainsaws. So the chainsaw became the famous murder weapon for the movie.
