This was the product number Levi Strauss & Co. assigned to their jeans in 1890. For more facts and history of 501s, visit http://www.levistrauss.com/about/history/501s.htm

Simple really. Levis uses their 5XX series of numbers to identify characteristics of jeans. 501= boot cut, regular cut, button fly 505= boot cut, regular cut 550= boot cut, Loose cut 560= boot cut, Baggy Etc etc etc.

it is the catalog lot number Levi Strauss originally assigned to the denim waist overall in the late 1800's. Levis jeans up through the late 1950's say "Lot 501XX" on the tag, as opposed to "501XX" or "501" as on modern jeans. Also, none of the jeans mentioned above are boot-cut. The 517 or "Saddleman" is the classic Levi's bootcut.

Levi's 501 refers to the Original button fly Levi's jeans. The standard jean with a zipper is the 505, which is cut similarly to the 501, except that it has a zipper fly. There are many other model numbers, e.g., 517 for the boot cut jean, 550 for the relaxed fit.
