Cement roadbed seems to be the wave of the future. It is permanent and weatherproof. It is also labor intensive, but once it's done, it's DONE. You don't have to keep maintaining it like you do gravel roadbed, and no washouts after a rainstorm. Of course, if you know nothing about pouring concrete, you may be more inclined to use gravel. Find a friend, teacher or contractor who can get you started in pouring concrete. Your railroad will be the better for it.
