  • Because the bible once read, has a way of not corresponding with what they've been taught. for example- the Rapture. http://www.evilbible.com/about_evil_bible.htm
  • Because they know how it turns out in the end.
  • Because the Bible is a story, not a history book.
  • lol..I have a relationship ,strong one, Because of the WORD.....and rarely go to church anymore...I would totally be lost ,again, without it...It is the most important way I have grown and continue to KNOW HIM ...... I know many in churches who no nothing but the 'doctrine' they are taught...they reason for themselves none at all....the lack of knowledge in a womans study last year ,full of elderly church goers all their lives, was so disheartening to me.... I have heard the same, even , 'oh,I beieve in God ,just not the Bible' ..and that is ignorant and TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE....we have to have knowledge of HIM and HIS PLAN for the WOrld, which was the Savior.... i don't judge them, they mean well, they just do not have an understanding as I do and many more..... thatsJustme:)
  • It is not an easy book to read and understand. Even the most modern of translations have lots of contradictions due to the way a different writer or translator wrote. Most people give up at some point because it is so large and things are so scattered. You also need to know and understand the culture and times in which the writer(s)was living also. There have been a number of writers identified for each part through the study of their writing styles and their use of language. Sometimes there are more than one story for a happening. e.g. the flood. It is much easier to take the word of experts and believe in your own ways. It has been said that for every Christian there are separate beliefs. The most important is to believe and trust and live as best you can and repent for any mistakes you have made.
  • The bible is boring.
  • The concept of divinity is a flexible one. Back in the day, people used to believe that there was a place that they couldn't see to that there lived an actual man-like god that dictated the twisted, ironic fates of mankind. Now, the concept has evolved into a more metaphysical one, mostly that of the single God being a force of love and creation on a higher plane of existence (note how a place we can't see to is still necessary though). The Bible is a static story, and a depressing one, full of blood and hate - the story can't evolve, because the memes are set, but the concept of God is free to because it's not tied down to any story or static meme.
  • I read the Bible in order to do Bible study and to understand sermons, and I also feel that I have a strong relationship with God. What stops me from reading the Bible all the time is that I find that there are so many ways of God that I am not on the same page, about. I feel a sense of disloyalty to God by not feeling able to uphold His Holy Word. I think the Bible is interesting and beautifully written in parts. I believe it as God's Word, and I take it very seriously. I feel as if I am somehow falling short by not being in total agreement with a God I love so much...
  • Because it's better if their pastor/priest/minister tells them about it. It's like reading a bed-time story to a kid: they leave all the scary parts out and only tell the fuzzy wozzy ones
  • Because if they did, Christianity would fall. The leaders don't really want you to read the bible. Only the front men tell you to read it. Anyone in their right mind would reject Christianity on the basis of who God is written to be in the old testament. Christianity would no longer be profitable.
  • ...well. If a person has the holy spirit, the holy spirit guides them. The bible to begin with a way of finding God...you do a little searching, alittle learning...and it can lead you down the path to finding him. But once a person has found him, its a referance...or a pick me up, you go in there and read a few stories about people...and its exciting. Its not that they dont wanna read it...you can pick a verse and meditate on it. ...but really its all about the holy spirit, and about Jesus' commandment. "Love thy neighbor as thyself"...if you can do that, you kinda fullfill the whole thing anyways. I dunno...lol, I read the bible. I have my seasons though.
  • The judgement on pastors as leaders of a flock (so to speak) is a very harsh one in the Bible. If a congregation is not reading the bible in their place of worship... That is a direct reflection on the man leading them wrong. Some people know it by heart. Some know enough to reference it for life when necessary. I don't read it because everytime I do... The Devil chases me around the table with a stick and tries to beat me to death. Me and God converse casually until he learns to deal with his creation!
  • cuz bible says , evenif you read bible every min, that doesnt makes you a good christian..
  • Growth for a Christian is brought by the Word. It gives us understanding and convicts us of our wrongdoing. There should be a desire, a passion for God's word. If it's HIS word, we should yearn for it. Some claim that the Bible isn't relevant today. It was used only for "back then." This is why it is still relevant...the human race is still sinful. Our human nature has not changed. We are still the sinful, wicked race we were. The Bible stands relevant TODAY and it gives us growth and brings us up in the path of righteousness. "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; " -2 Timothy 3:16
  • Many Americans claim to be Christian and believe in God. Not Allah, not Buddha; God. Thus, there is a bit of peer pressure to believe in God, or at least give the appearance of doing so. However, reading the Bible involves actually reading. That in and of itself will dissuade many people. My MIL feigns illiteracy to avoid reading. I doubt she's read a book at all since she dropped out of the fifth grade half a century ago. Also, reading the Bible requires that one interpret things on their own. Why do that if the pastor/minister/priest will do your interpretation for you? The same goes in the political realm; why think when the PR-men tell you what to think? Besides, any intelligent person who reads the Bible for themselves will notice inconsistencies in it that will shatter their faith. That will lead to them either leaving "the flock" or to fearfully shut the covers of the Good Book and let their clergymen tell them what it all means. Of course, no *good* Christian would vote for Obama unless they want to be excommunicated and burn in Hell. And the Inquisitions only killed 2,000 people total. Oh, and Jesus cold not be tempted because he had no penis. (I wish I were kidding, but I heard that one once!) So, do you want your faith shattered or do you want to read the Bible yourself?
  • They are lazy and just want the good easy stuff of God without putting in the effort. How good would your relationship be with your friends if you never tried to learn about them or get to know them better? If they really believe their relationship with God is strong then they are deluding themselves to cover up guilt.
  • Maybe they fall into the category of Matthew 7:21-23.The true christian will love Gods word.
  • hehe nice
  • Most of the Christians I know do read the bible every single day. You cannot truly get to know someone if you don't spend time talking to them and listening to what they have to say. The same is true with God. He reveals Himself to us through the Holy Scriptures, through creation/nature, through our consciences, and through Jesus. The more someone reads the Word, the more they grow in wisdom and are able to comprehend the truth in the words. In these verses, Jesus is reinforcing the accuracy of the Scriptures down to the smallest detail and the slightest punctuation mark, because it is the very Word of God: (Matthew 5:17-18) “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law...” Here are some other verses that speak of the holy scripture being God's Word: (2 Timothy 3:15-17) “From infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (Mark 13:31) “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (2 Peter 1:21) "For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit." (Psalm 12:6) "And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times." Jesus is the word of God: (John 1:14) "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:1) "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." We are to understand that the Bible IS the Word of God (truth) and we are to correctly handle the Word: (2 Timothy 2:15) "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." And ofcourse we are to read the Word every day just as we eat every day: (Deuteronomy 8:3) "He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord."
  • Cause their probably not saved. When I thought for all those years that i was saved,I had no desire for Gods word,I went to church, but would be bored. But when God truly saved me last september,I fell in love with His word and wanted to be around strong biblical preaching.I now love to be at church, and here the word of God be preached. The mojority of my day now is listening to sermon audio, and just thinking on the things of God.You can't be saved and find the things of God boring.Jesus said your made a new creature, your old desires are dead, you now desire the things of God.Not saying you want watch anything that isn't about God,but you will desire to please God.Like Paul Washer asked what do you think about most in the day? That is your God.1 John is clear on what a true biblical christian is.
  • Because if they did, they would probably stop believing in God.
  • There are a lot of "Christians" that are not born-again. God said in Ezekiel 36:26,27 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statues, and ye, shall keep my judgments, and do them. After my Lord saved me He gave me a thirst to read and study His word. My thoughts are constantly on Him and I want to be in my Heavenly Fathers will and presence.
  • It's long, boring, and full of shit.
  • Because it is full of absurd, contradictory, false and unsubstantiated rubbish! e.g. 'God’s Word of Bible' approves of Evidence for prosperous places on(flat!) earth without God’s presence! (The city of Enoch, Nod, east of Eden!) Genesis-4:16-18. Non-vegetarian fetish or preference for ‘slaughter of first-born’ over fruit of soil from toil: Genesis-4:3-7. Fostering inter-brother hate: Genesis-4:8-9 God, protector of brother-murderer! Genesis-4:10-15 Inter-brother hate & sanction of hereditary slavery: Genesis-9:18-27 Hate of other-god-believers: Deuteronomy-13:1-18, Leviticus-20:1-5 Stone disobedient son to death: Deuteronomy-21:18-21, Leviticus-20:9 Kill man, woman, child, livestock-Siege of Jericho-Joshua-6:21, 26 Divine plunder: Joshua-6:19, 24 Divine plunder by espionage & with assistance of prostitute[s]: Joshua-2:1, 6:25 Divine terror: Song of Moses-Deuteronomy-32:23-27. Preference to non-vegetarian over vegetarian (offerings), herders over farmers: Genesis-4:2-5 And this is just the beginning! SHAME!
  • It just happens to be dull as dishwater. But also because lots of modern believers feel that they have a far more spiritual relationship with God which doesnt need to be grounded with tings like the Bible.
  • Well, it's not exactly a riveting read!
  • I feel as did the Psalmist who recorded this. Psalm 19:7-11 says: "The law of Jehovah is perfect, bringing back the soul. The reminder of Jehovah is trustworthy, making the inexperienced one wise.   The orders from Jehovah are upright, causing the heart to rejoice; The commandment of Jehovah is clean, making the eyes shine.   The fear of Jehovah is pure, standing forever. The judicial decisions of Jehovah are true; they have proved altogether righteous.  They are more to be desired than gold, yes, than much refined gold; And sweeter than honey and the flowing honey of the combs.  Also, your own servant has been warned by them; In the keeping of them there is a large reward". Later on the Psalm 119 is a song about its composer’s feelings toward God’s inspired message, or word. The psalmist sings: “In my heart I have treasured up your saying.” “For your statutes I shall show a fondness.” “My soul is crushed with longing for your judicial decisions all the time.” “Your reminders are what I am fond of.” “I have longed for your orders.” “I shall show a fondness for your commandments that I have loved.” “I will concern myself with your regulations.” “How I do love your law! All day long it is my concern.”—Psalm 119:11, 16, 20, 24, 40, 47, 48, 97. That is the attitude that true Christians should have today. That is my goal, to be like that.
  • Just think. One old, outdated book, full of repetitive, contradictory & unsubstantiated BS. So many different messages, need for 'interpretation' & editing out the filth (Genesis 9:18-27, 19: 31-38, 38: 13-19, Ezekiel: 16 & so on). Surely, some time, one's bound to realize that Bible must be crap! Then why waste time reading it? * Such can't be said of a dictionary, or mathematical log-table, or even telephone-book!
  • I don't think that it's because they don't want to, I think it's because they either don't want to take the time, or most likely they tried to read the Bible once and had one of the older translations that was hard to understand. That happened to me at first, but when I tried the "New International Version," the story was reworded a bit so that it was easier to understand and follow. If you start reading the Bibe from the beginning, some of the most boring parts of the Bible are near the beginning. Many people get to this part (such as the book of Numbers) and give up. It might be better to follow a Bible reading plan the has you read a little from the New Testament as well as some from the Old Testament each day. Other reading plans pick out the most important parts and skip a lot of the boring stuff.
  • Here some of my thoughts : 1. Based purely on my wife being a Catholic she was taught that (1) only priests can truly understand the Bible, so the flock or congregation should not do so and (2) there is no need to read the Bible, when as a Catholic you are taught to be a good Catholic and basically be loving and kind, which my wife certainly is. 2. The liturgy each Sunday is enough for some people 3. Many people continue to only want to be given 'milk' (figuratively), not food 4. In the Catholic faith, and probably to some degree the Protestant, taking the Eucharist or the Communion is more important : you are being fed the blood and body of Christ 5. For me, when I am down I am not inclined to read the Bible 6. The lure of other good books steers me away 7. Satan does not want you to read it. 8. People do not like reading, particularly 'deep' stuff Hope this helps.
  • The christians that go to church on sunday are only a small portion of those who label themselves christians..it is a shame..my bible does not have dust on it, nor do my childrens..i know many christians who could not get through a day without their bibles...however too many people think they are immortal..they think that even though they believe in christ that they always have tomorrow to learn more..they let everyday things in this life consume their days...they run from work to school to daycare to pick up the kids..home to make dinner and never once open a bible..too busy for god..and it really is a shame
  • No one could truly answer this question--except for the "Christians" themself. But technically, this same hypocritical attitude is not uncommon amongst non-christians. Consider during the christmas season, how many people will wish you a "merry christmas", while during the REST of the year--are total A$$HOLES!!!
  • Because it's all become ceremonial. This is the last papacy and most of the abuses of priests, the church power and bible tampering have distorted the true message so they are going for the illusions and what makes them happy rather than face what is right.
  • In the whole realm of things, you know very few Christians. Read your Bible as often as you like and do not worry about what others do or do not do.
  • they are christians ,... they are used to being programeed, and told what to do . they dont want to read , research , and think for themselves . if they did they would not have become christains in the first place . , there is no such thing as a christain leader .they are all followers ;-)
  • Maybe because some people think it's a boring read.
  • I believe your question here may be answered in many of the books of the Bible. One place is the book of II Timothy 4:3-4...........Just like the Prophecies foretold about.....Plus 5 for your question my FRIEND.
  • Because most people do not understand one single word of it and pretend and argue all day that they do.
  • People don't read these days. We are very restless and impatient. We want the instant entertainment; instant gratification. People don't have the patience to study because most of their mental energy has been taken up by work and they want everything now. I saw something of this in myself so I virtually quit watching tv. Try it. It's the best way to get your attention span back.
  • supposed to be a comment...
  • That would spoil all the fun. actually, it's curious as I have met many (and I'm sort of like that, read every so often, but not everyday) and I think it can be for different reasons. Remember, Man loves darkness more then light. Swaggart and several high ranking Pastors were caught in fleshly lusts/pursuits. Should they be condemned? No they are like us "Human" and have moral failings and they do regret them (Well, I'd hope they did) and they do (Some) stive to once again re-connect with God and their true purpose. But don't judge them on this alone. Some are quite good, little by little they read. And then there's those who relay on "Other" books which are false. You'll meet them to one day. Be careful.
  • 8-20-2017 In the 19th century Americans started moving west and three institutions went with them. There was vaudeville, traveling entertainment. There was lyceum, traveling education and culture. And there was the itinerant preacher, offering a new style of preaching called "hell fire and brim stone". It was very entertaining, only loosely based on scripture, and pastors didn't even try to compete. Instead they switched to preaching public morality and philosophy. Eventually an entire generation grew up not knowing the first thing about the religion they claimed to believe. That is why most Christian churches don't teach doctrines, and most members don't know what they are supposed to believe.
  • i know with me i get too lazy to read stuff
  • they might be too busy to read it
  • Most churches have become social clubs. If church pastors can keep their congregations blinded from the scriptures, it makes it easy for them to "manipulate" their herd. John 10:12-13 "He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep."
  • It takes commitment, The Bible is a wonderful book, and if you think of it as a letter from a friend that you can read and reread, it will bring you closer to God, but to come to know anyone most, people start with their name. I would like to encourage you to start with Psalms83:18. I have heard that the Bible contradicts itself, I don't find that to be true, if you can imagen a letter being dictated to 40 men over a couple thousand years, starting from Genesis (paradise lost)to Revelation (paradise gained) and every thing that has transpired or will; to accomplish God's purpose for this earth and mankind, maintains this tough out. What is God's purpose? If you look at the first two books of the Bible, you will see that Adam and Eve were to live forever have children, take care of this earth make and it a paradise. The hope that one day we will return to that paradise and no more will sickness, problems, or even death afflict humans forever is a wonderful hope that can be found at Revelations 21:3-4. I can go on and on about the wonderful message that the bible holds for everyone that takes the time to look into it. May I also encourage you to visit the web site JW.org for more topics on the Bible.
  • There is nothing in the bible requiring us to read it. It did not fall from heaven with the voice of God thundering "READ MY BOOK". Going to church and having it read in church is enough for most people.
  • If they actually read the book would they still believe? For a lot of religious people I see going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in garage makes you a car
  • Heads up: I've read several different versions of the Bible cover-to-cover. However: I am definitely the exception. Answering your question: ***1*** The Bible is NOT a piece of literature that is easy to read...not even for someone who is very motivated to do so. It's ancient, foreign literature. It's one of the longest books in the World. It's often VERY dry (think: like reading a history textbook - a 12th-grade level history textbook). So: these are all characteristics that discourage the typical someone who would LIKE to read the Bible. Typically a person who WANTS to read the Bible - really does want to do so - isn't sufficiently motivated to force themselves to complete the task. Even a person who is an avid reader of modern literature is often stymied by the difficult qualities of the Bible. ***2*** The typical Christian *is* encouraged by their religious leader(s) to read their Bibles (there ARE exceptions). However: only a few religious leaders emphasize that reading the entire Bible as an IMPORTANT thing to accomplish. ***3*** Religious leaders of many groups (but note: definitely a minority of Christians) focus on a particular set of passages (a large set, but still only a small percentage of the entire Bible), and these leaders largely ignore the remainder of the Bible and typically encourage their followers to read only the specific set of passages that the leader uses to support their teachings. *** Main Point *** But the bottom line is that most Christians - nearly all - are NOT taught that it is vital to read the Bible. You might think, "How odd. Most of them can read. Bibles are readily available. It's their most fundamental and central holy book. Why do their leaders not emphatically require them to read it?" Remember that during most of Christianity's lifetime, the great majority of Christians were illiterate. Probably several of the apostles were illiterate. My point is this: ***from its very foundations*** Christianity has NOT required its followers to read religious texts. Throughout most of the centuries of Christianity there was NO reason for a leader to suggest to their followers that the typical follower ought to read the Bible. Why? Because throughout most of Christianity's existence, Bibles were much too expensive and the typical Christian was much too illiterate. So: Christianity ***from its foundations*** has not required reading the Bible.
  • The Bible is a reference book, not required reading.
  • Many Christians lie and give lip service to the faith. It's all just a show to them.
