well my personal belief is that no one should swear on the Bilbe...I'd refuse...and I'm not atheist...
-
they just take an oath to tell the truth without any special book.
-
Ask for a copy of the Constitution to swear on. It has been done.(US)
-
Explain that it is ultimately pointless although you are willing to swear, just not on a book
-
no harm no foul I guess..I mean if they want you to swear on it, I guess if you lie, there's no one to answer to right?!
-
Sorry, my mom said I shouldn't swear.

Great answers so far, people!

The value you place on any holy or other book is based on the belief. A Christian would have no value for the Hindu Geeta, similarly a Hindu would disregard a Bible!Since an Atheist would not believe in any holy book it would be as good as any other book, so swearing on any book would be useless for him!
-
I don't think it can come up in the U.S. When you are in court or signing an affidavit they ask you to swear or affirm that the information is correct. I would decline to swear an oath to a god. It is unconstitutional.
-
As Her Majesty, we suggest the atheist subsstitute a book by Spinoza.
-
Well, the religious don't have the monopoly on honesty so just swearing to tell the truth in front of the court should be sufficient.
-
I just affirm that I'm telling the truth. if that's not good enough then tough luck.
-
The question is why would an Atheist care? Are you afraid you'll go to Hell if you do?
-
I would never swear on a book I do not believe in. I would request that I take some other form of oath.

In British courts, atheists have the option of affirming instead of swearing on the Bible or other holy book. This is simply the same promise to tell the truth, without the book. The hand us customarily held raised, palm forwards. I believe the same option is available in most other Anglo-Saxon derived courts.
-
Nothing. Because courts don't ask that anymore for damn near 20 years.
-
State their lack of belief in it and request an alternatively acceptable means of confirming truth
-
S/he ought to have the right to refuse.
