cicadas live underground as a lavae for up to 7 years, then dig their way out, turn into a beetle type insect, shed their skins, live for a few days, the males making that incredibly loud sound by vibrating their wings to attract a female, they mate, then die..... Snakes aren't just one long row of muscle. In fact, they have very, very precise control of thier muscles even in the tiniest spots. I was once annoying a very large snake (about 12 feet long) in it's cage to see if I could prod it to move. I started poking at it, and with the muscles in that one little area, it swatted my finger away!
