Maybe it's just your "ear". The same could be said for singers who have a particularly high, falsetto-like vocal range. Frankie Valle, Smokey Robinson or Eddie Kendricks immediately come to mind. -

I know that he still enjoys tremendous popularity but I think he's a bloated gassy has-been who is trading on the success of days gone by. My mom saw him a few years back and said that he acted like he was doing the audience a favor by being there.

You think HE sounds like a woman? How about Barry Gibbs, of Bee Gees fame? Just in case you have never heard of one of the all time best songs from the Disco Era (And personally, about the only Disco song I really like): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCAjmuA1HDk (I'll post the actual video here later, when I'm not at work, but you can still see it at the link above) Enjoy! <EDIT> Here's the video itself: . .

In his autobiography, "Once Before I Go," he claims his best friend is a physician. I think the doctor (s) gave Wayne Newton regular shots of Testosterone, which lowered his voice and made him less feminine looking. I saw him on the Jerry Lewis Telethon about 15 years ago. When he started to sing I thought he was drunk. I had taped it and my brother and I watched it over a few times. My guess is he can no longer sing because the Testosterone made him lose control of his vocal cords. The testosterone made him lose most of his hair; he wears a toupee.
