There are only about 100 factors so nobody can do more than guess. People like to idealize past relationships and so an ex can seem great! People forget whey they broke up in the first place. Also, it is somebody they have been intimate with, at least to some degree. So, its easy to fall into a kiss with somebody you have already kissed just like it is easier to have a conversation with somebody whom you have already had a conversation.

Friendship. Now, if the kiss is long and passionate, that is something else again. I would kiss an ex on the cheek and be pleased if he kissed me on the cheek. I think remaining friends with an ex is a very desirable thing..after all, you once loved each other..why the need to be anything else but pleasant? :)
