  • This certainly has become a concern in some areas. I don't know that there is a simple answer. You could come right out and ask to see a current mortgage statement. The landlord would be under no obligation to show it to you, however, since it is privileged information. You could check the local newspaper of record for Sheriff Sale advertisements over the past few months. Unfortunately, that would not assure you that the property will not go into foreclosure in the near future. You could ask permission to see a recent copy of the landlord's credit report for derogatory entires. Again, they don't have to provide it. Furthermore, that doesn't assure you that the property is not in a separate corporate name. Lots of gotchas, all the way around. I guess that you will just have to interview a few of the other renters and rely on your instincts.
