in england we have a shampoo called john freida 'sheer blonde' which works pretty well. Look out for that or something similar.

I would use a toner, that is sort of ashy blonde to take away the brassy color..

You need to use a "toner" However light you want your blonde to be. 8 is about the darkest blonde and 10-11 is the lightest. Depending on how blonde you want it pick a number 8-11 and get a color that has that number followed by a V (violet) On the color wheel, violet colors eliminate the brassy tones. I'd recommend about a 9V or a 10V. Apply it to dry hair and Leave it on for about 12 minutes thoroughly saturated. Rinse with cold-ish water to seal the cuticle of your hair.

I use Born Blonde Toner. It's a semi permanent color that tones brassiness. I use Winsome Wheat.

we have Sheer Blonde in the US as well, and it does not get rid of brassiness whatsoever. toners do work.. usually.. but be very careful of the toner you buy, it's probably best to have a professional recommend the exact kind to get simply because the wrong toner could make your hair too ashy, or it might even look brown again.

There are several products on the market but most are only available through a beauty supply store. If you have a Sally Beauty Supply in your city, they sell nearly everything you will need. For extreme brassiness, we use Miss Clairol Brass Buster. It comes in several shades of blonde and brown and is a permanent haircolor. Personally, if the hair is already colored, we use Clairol Radiance semi-permanent. You should get an ash shade one shade lighter than your hair color. You also have to mix it with Radiance Color Infuser. I really like this stuff because it leaves the hair shiny and only takes 5 minutes to color the hair without any damage. It lasts about 3 to 4 weeks. I cannot stress this enough - Ash shades are violet, blue, blue-violet, and green based. DO NOT USE a dark shade of anything on your hair to get out the yellow or brassy color. Even if your hair is medium blonde, it's best to go with a light ash shade like pale ash blonde or you will end up with a dark smokey grey color. If this happens, you should use a color remover (have some on hand just in case). Buy the non-peroxide based remover so you won't damage your hair. You can also use Clairol Shimmer Lights shampoo and conditioner which will tone down the hair. Sally sells the generic shampoo also which is a lot cheaper and works just as well. I'm not really big on the Shimmer Lights conditioner and prefer One and Only Shiny Silver over it. Don't freak out at the bright purple of both shampoo and conditioner. It will not turn your hair purple. For a temporary fix when in a real hurry, you can purchase Roux Color Mousse in a grey or ash blonde shade. However, do not over-apply this stuff and it washes out with one shampoo. It also rubs off easily and will turn a white collar purple or grey. If you sweat, expect streaks running down your face and neck! The new products by Pantene and John Frieda and all the other junk sold in drugstores isn't potent enough to end the yellow or brassiness. It barely even tones it down. The color glazes they've come out with are totally worthless for toning. Good luck and remember, no matter how much you screw up your hair color, it can usually be fixed. You might have to visit a salon, but it's better than going around with green or bright orange hair. And keep a packet of color remover around just in case!

lemon juice and water, just squeeze the juice of a lemon and put it into a spray bottle topped with water, lemon juice has natural bleaching qualities, so it will take out the brassy tones in hair, also great for a chemical free lightening proceedure, just pop it in wet hair and let the sun dry it. (tip: this also works on yellow nails)

I am an expert in this stuff! I have coloured my hair from brown to blonde and back again so many times, but the one product that has saved me time and time again from the dreaded YELLOW TONE is Clairol Born Blonde Toner in 'LIGHT ASH BLONDE'. This shade does not turn that funny grey/beige colour, nor does it tone down all your blonde, like some can. What it does is creates a pretty pale blonde colour with hints of peach tones in areas where the hair is damaged. It creates good ashy tones all over the hair so the different levels of blonde still show through - just not through yellow bits! I have just ordered more of it since I have gone blonde again (my local hair salon did the bleaching) and I have a few golden tones in it but it's not pale enough for my skin tone so Born Blonde is on the cards this week as soon as it gets posted to my house. Never use a permanent blonde colour on bleached hair - it doesn't work good and you can't do much if it goes wrong - you'll end up at a salon paying a fortune anyway so save yourself the grief! So, a light ash blonde is the way forward girls - don't even think about beige blonde or silver as they can go really dull.

Oh My Gosh -- I had same question. Wrote to L'Oreal and asked them about returning product to the market and they told me that they never will do that. They suggested their new "toner" but I told them I used it twice and it didn't do a thing to help the brassiness. BUT -- Get this!!! I tried the new haircolor by Natural Instincts (Brass Free Blond -- medium blond) and IT WORKED LIKE MAGIC. Even my husband, who gets this horrified look on his face when I attempt to do my color myself at home (yes, I have a husband who WANTS me to spend almost $300/month at a fancy uptown Dallas salon!), told me that my color looks as good as or better than when I "get it done." And that's a HUGE compliment. This color (which I put on my roots for five minutes, and on my ends for only five minutes as the directions indicate) took all of the bleached brassiness out of my over-highlighted hair and it looks natural and blonde, and with tons of highlights. It didn't darken my highlights -- it only toned them to a natural "baby blonde" color and it warmed my natural dark ash blond hair to a nice neutral (non-ashey) blonde color. My few grew highlights are perfect blonde highlights and I'm so excited to find this "do it myself" solution that looks so good on a person like me -- on whom EVERYTHING I use at home turns brassy. So, wanted to share with you girls. Can't guarantee that it'll turn out that good for you, but I'm so excited about MY results that I just had to share! Good luck!!!

I'm doing this now. I didn;t get my hair to the pale yellow stage - I always rinse the bleach out too soon because I'm paranoid about damage. I'd rather wait a week or so and bleach again than lose all my hair. Anyway, in the meantime, I have a mix of yellow/gold/orange-ey hair. The clairol creme toner I used (302 - I think) didn't really cut down much of the brassiness. Also, the purple shampoos and conditioners helped only a little. I followed the directions on the toner and applied to damp hair - might try directly to dry hair next time. Also, I went for a toner that was violet - think I need blue/violet instead so will go back to Sally's tomorrow. Over all I'm pleased because I know if I'm patient I will achieve a nice blonde. I'll be happy if I can eventually eliminate the brass. The hard part is getting it light enough without accidentally going past the pale yellow stage. My hair is soooo fragile. Fine/porous but reasonable thick. Originally dark brown but some grey now (one good thing is with enough grey - I don't have to do highlights to get color variation). Wish me luck.

a woman that works at a local beauty shop told me to mix two parts of any kind of conditioner to one part of grape juice & leave it in my hair for about twenty minutes. i haven't tried it, but she claimed it worked like magic. ????

On damaged hair that needs a break- Fanci-Full in Mynx after washing and conditioning as a 'leave in'...stinks but I added a bit of grapefruit essential oils to cut the old lady smell. If hair is in good condition for coloring- use Clairol Brass Busters (a shade OR two lighter than what you are trying to acheive) w/ a 10 volume developer. Make sure the color you pick is blue/violet/green based (says on the bottle). Good luck!

I went from blonde to dark brown back to blonde A month ago I went to the professionals to go from dark brown to blonde. It cost me $200.00 and came home with orange hair and I looked like a clown. I went to Sally and bought bleach and bleached it myself, twice. A couple of weeks later I need to touch up my roots. so I went to the drugstore and got Loreal Les Blondiness in lightest ash blonde. Before I started I put cholsetral all over the ends so it wouldn't be harmed. When it was done I had white gray hair on top and red/gold hair on the bottom. I went to Sallys and got imperial beige toner by Wella. Put that in for 2 minutes and showered. I have no brass and its all one color a bit darker than I like but I am sure it will fade out a bit. It looks very natural and to my surprise its in really good condition considering what its been through. I have thought of using clariols brass busters but they don't come in very light shades.

use a toner, they work serious miracles. go to a sally's beauty store and ask them for blue based toner

As much as some of these might have worked out for you, these aren't the safe options. Toners in salons are cheap and they are the safest option. If youre paying to get your hair lightened colored or highlighted in a salon, pay the extra money to get a toner, but definately ASK QUESTIONS. Find out what line of color they use and then do some research. PM shines have an awesome shade.. Iced latte which is a 9bv that works awesome and Redken Shades EQ is also phenomenal. Lightened hair is already compromised, don't mess around with it. And if you're just looking for a slight tone, try shimmer lights or the loreal artect shampoos & conitioners in white violet. Also.. to eliminate this problem in the first place, if your hair is at least a natural level 7 or so (light brown.. dirty blonde) there are ways to lighten your hair with color.. consider that option as its always MUCH healthier than a bleach.

I was going to ask the same question. My hair is strawberry blonde with highlights. I get mine done at the salon and Im usually very happy with it. This time the salon had no junior and my stylist was rushing to finish to go home. I dont think she left the bleach on long enough as I have some light blonde and some gingery/ yellow blonde highlights. Didnt want to go back to complain, but I have an Xmas party coming up and I want my highlights without the yellow tone. What can I do?
