We plan to use the FIL's home as a vacation home as it's in the mountains and hopefully stop renting soon and buy a house where we are now.

6-13-2017 My father came here in 1948 with a wife and seven kids. He bought a lot and built a little place he intended to be a two car garage on the back, and the family moved into that while he built a real house on the front of the lot. That was a common plan in those days, but neighbors would call the cops if you tried to do such a thing today. It's not a free country any more. But I digress. We set up housekeeping in the garage in 1953 and the real house was completed in 1962. It's all paid off now. We can't sell the place because this is the armpit of the nation and nobody wants to live here. Except that it's almost free for us. So my brother lives in the big house where it only costs him taxes and utilities, and I live in the back house where it only costs me the upkeep.
