  • I don't think of it as a sport, personally, but it is skill against skill, so I can understand that in that sense it is... ;-)
  • has all the proper elements!
  • Yes, by definition, it is a sport ...... Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports (a common name for some card games and board games with little to no element of chance) and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors. Some of the physical sports include association football, basketball, water polo, and baseball.
  • No way. nascar is such a waste of gas.
  • I personally don't think so, because in my mindset, sports are when you're physically moving your body and exercising. I honestly do not care about NASCAR at all, so that may also affect how I view it. ;)
  • I don't like NASCAR, I find it pretty boring. But it is surprisingly physically intensive, requires skills - both mental and physical - it has a defined set of rules, and healthy competition. So yea, I'd call it a sport.
  • sport /spÉ”rt, spoÊŠrt/ Pronunciation[spawrt, spohrt] –noun 1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc. Based on that I guess since it's competitive it could be considered a sport?? haha
  • no it just wastes gas and brings up the prices for us and i dont remember the last time watching football made me pay more for a gallon of gas
  • Personally I dont think of it as a sport.
  • yes. you drive in the cockpit of a car that is 130 degrees, for 3 to 4 hours in a fire suit. they on average lose ten pounds in a race. it takes mental and physical toughness. and if you think NASCAR is a waste of gas, then you must just hate NASA and environmentalists...
  • I have to say yes I think it is.
  • No. Its racing, which isnt to say its not hard, but its not an "athletic sport"
  • Yes it is a Motor Sport. Not one of my favourite sports to watch.
  • It is a competition with a regulating body, rules, so I guess it is a sport. I don't watch it as I prefer something that goes on a road course and cars that drive in the rain, but it is a sport.
  • Another left turn!!!!
  • As much as ANY racing is a sport... Is Horse racing a sport? I mean, the jockey only rides, right? How 'bout BMX Motocross? Again, the riders only ride... Formula 1? Indy-Car? As I said at http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/3011893 : "[D]on't EVEN try to say the drivers are NOT intelligent or athletes. Let's see YOU drive a car like that, in a confined space like that, in over 100 degree weather, at 230MPH, and NOT hit the wall in your first lap at that speed. (And that would be ALONE on the track.) Now add 42 MORE cars out there, every ONE of them looking for the same piece of track... Add the wind coming off cars doing 180-230MPH, add the tire conditions, add... It takes a LOT of intelligence, energy, stamina, reactions, strength, and experience." So, I would say, YES... NASCAR is as much a sport as any other vehicle- or animal-racing is.
  • i think both ;]
  • skill, it came from the days of running "moonshine" and not getting caught.
  • its not a skill or a sport. its a hobby. what do you think is harder and more dangerous. driving the streets of america with thousands of 1st time teenage drivers, horrid drivers with their minds in outter space, drunk drivers, and old blind handicapped people. or driving around a circle of all left turns with 45 cars. the only thing that seperates nascar drivers from every day drivers is the millions of dollars it takes to be able to support your race car throught a nascar series.
  • I would say "Back in the Day" it was a sport but it has developed into a big business show.. You no longer have the best drivers in some cases.. You have the most marketable drivers. They have to be pretty, articulate, abel to sell products, and woo the ladies.. Legendary drivers like A J Foyt, Lee Petty, Junior Johnson, Cale Yarborough, & Curtis Turner would not be able to get a ride today.. Waaaayy too controversial, outspoken or prone to physical confrontations or David Pearson who was not good at post race interviews and couldn't spend 1/2 hour blowing sunshine up the butts of two dozen sponsers.. And forget about the legendary mechanics like Smokey Yunick or Hoss Ellington lasting more than one or two races without being suspended for life for any one of their "Innovations"
  • no i think u have to be athletic to play a sport
  • definitely
  • Yes its a battle out there go Jeff Gordon!
  • no i consider sports things that demand physical activity like running or performing a stunt ex: football baseball basketball cheerleading etc.
  • Yes as it takes skill to handle those cars and keep from recking and going off the track at such high speeds.
  • Well, it's sport ISH.
  • absolutely not. ping pong is more rigorous exercise.+3
  • Of course. It's obvious many who answered this question have no idea how physically and mentally demanding it is to race one of those cars 500 miles. It takes not only an athlete but someone with a great deal of mental capacity and focus. It is extremely demanding and it being a sport is not in question.
  • Nascar is a sport. It's all mental and physical. And there is a winner like any other sport.
  • No. I don't understand how people making left turns for hours at 200 miles an hour is considered a sport. Your not physically pushing yourself to limits, your driving.
  • Of course it is, one of the biggest in America.
  • lol no. WOOOO another left turn!!!! maybe the guys in the pit changing tires is sporty ya know
  • YES AND #88 ROCKS
  • Absolutely.
  • Yes, I do.
  • It's a sport - look at the previous sport defined: –noun 1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature Skill - CHECK! (could you drive the car??) Physical Prowess - CHECK (These drivers physically HOLD this car where it needs to be driven) Competitive - CHECK - NEED I SAY MORE?!?!?! leftturngirl.com
  • yes, its racing with really fast cars and controlling them is the sport. also trying to beat everyone!
  • Yes. They're athletes as much as in any other sport.
  • It requires much skill to drive a 120 degree car for five hours going 185+ mph making only left turns. It is very tolling on your body, just ask Jeff Gordon, and these guys hit the gym constantly.
  • +5 yes
