No they aren't scripted. That was the reason there were suddenly a wack of them when the writers went on strike. No need for script writers. No, what they do is shoot hundreds of hours of footage that is very skillfully edited down to the one or two hour show. The editing is done in such a way that your emotions are manipulated in just the way the producers hope. Even with shows like American Idol... the clips, at the end as a re-cap before you vote, are chosen for just the right emotional impact. Very little is shown on air (live or not) that isn't carefully picked to get the viewer to tune in next week or vote for the "right" contestant. Next time you watch one of these shows and you see something "behind the scenes" or "juicy," ask yourself "Why out the hundreds of hours of tape did they decide to show this bit?" With millions of dollars of revenue at stake, they're not taking any chances. Hope this helps.

Of course they are..otherwise no one would watch. They "encourage" certain outcomes. It's called "entertainment" because it's fake, make-believe, fantasy..:) Happy Tuesday! :)
