I was 27 and had just gotten a divorce the year before. My husband and I were still trying to make it work but it wasn't happening. I didn't want to leave my children just after they'd "lost" their dad, so I started selling Fuller brush door to door in the afternoons. I did really well and my father in law would come over and stay with my three children so I could work in the afternoons. It was humiliating when I'd ring a doorbell and someone I knew opened the door because my husband and I had done pretty well economically. But it proved to me that I could sell if I had enough information to overcome objections.

In July '68, I marked my 14th birthday. Dad just got outta the Army & we finally moved to a permanent residence (in NE Pa) the year before, so I finally had some "droogies" w/ whom I celebrated. Paramount on my mind @ the X was Debbie Miller (a really cute little blonde cupcake who let me put my arm around her sometimes!), the anticipatory anxiety of entering HS that fall, peace signs/symbols & (carefully) ripped jeans, inverted flags on all my army shirts/jackets, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Cream, Hendrix, The Who, smoking Salems and huffing glue at a special spot inna woods, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Grand Funk Railroad, Blue Cheer, Vanilla Fudge, *lotsa* "Motown jams".... ;-)
