I'm not too sure about the movie but she was supposed to have pricked her finger on the spinning wheel spindle in the book. Does that help?

I'm not sure that the prince falls asleep. I think he's the only one that doesn't fall asleep. I'm not sure, i have to watch it again. EDIT: Oh, sorry, the princess. This is why i need to work on my reading comprehension. But, yeah, I think she pricks her finger on the spindle thing.

In a nutshell: The witch put an evil spell on the princess so that she would die from touching a needle on a spinning wheel. But one of the good fairies changed the spell so that the princess would not die, just go into a deep sleep, from which she would be awoken by the kiss of her true love.
