I have a freshwater fish tank with a very high (8.8) pH level. Could this be because I use well water that has been through a softener? What can I do to lower the pH?

Go to your local petstore they will have kits to lower or raise your pH level. And yes well water could have a higher pH then regular tap water.

Hello; Yes, you have the right answer. When water is held underground it gets harder by picking up minerals. The sodium resin in your water softener converts calcium carbonate in the water into sodium carbonate and calcuim resin. Sodium carbonate is alkaline. OFM

My local tap water is high on ph and the Petco staff advised to change 25% water for few days and then check. Also stated that using bottled water as part of the 25% change would lower ph. She stated that the tablet to lower ph are not too effective that liquid is better. They sell them in small bottles. She stated that slightly high ph will not kill the fish however, high level of ammonia willl. Hope this helps. Also Walmart sells most of the items Petco does at a lower price.
