They use a tanning lotion just like the men body builders do. The tan makes them look even better then they would without one. The darker the better.

at body building competitions they have people that spray the competitors with a type of darkening agent, much like one in the sunless tanning booths. They do this because the darkening the skin helps show off muscle definition.
