Scratch. It's really not that hard. The trick is not to overbeat the batter - it takes all the air out and makes the cake heavy. Use your electric mixer only to blend the ingredients, then mix by hand. I have a great chocolate cake recipe if anyone wants it! LOL!!!

I use the mix. I also do that for brownies. I am planning to test drive this Christmas cookies-from-scratch book that I bought last week. ...waiting until it's a little closer to Christmas, though.

I've done both. It depends on who I'm making it for - some people really like a specific cake from a box mix as it reminds them of cakes they've had every year on their birthdays.

When I make cake, I bake from scratch but I do keep some mixes on hand to use them to make other things, like special gooey cakes for quick emergency desserts.

It depends on what kind of cake I want, and how many ingredients I already have at home. My personal favorite cake is from a recipe my grandmother made, so I usually make that if I'm in a cake mood.
