  • It is originally a Hindu custom. It went to far east along with Buddhism. This custom is still followed by most of the people in India, including my house.
  • I don't require it but many folks see that I don't wear shoes indoors and they see how nice my floors are and will remove their shoes on their own.
  • No, I don't remove my shoes when I enter my own home. However, I usually do when entering someone else's. There are many places here (India) that require you to remove your shoes prior to entering (temples, ayurvedic therapy, etc).

  • Removing ones footwear is a sign of humble respect. In many parts of the world it is custom to remove your footwear for this reason. I remove my footwear when I walk into any home If i am there for a visit and not working. I also remove my footwear in my own home and since i have nice hardwood floors and expensive rugs I ask those who visit me to do the same. (but not out of respect to me but to respect my home.

  • It's best to keep your shoes on in my house. I have those cheap tile floors with the shiny smooth surfaces- it's easy to slip and fall if you are barefoot.
  • We do, too. Not only is it respectful but it helps keep my home clean and sanitary as 'outside dirt' isn't tracked all over the place. Of course it's kind of moot as we have two dogs... but it helps. :)
  • I ask people to take their shoes off in my house too - mainly because I have a cream coloured carpet and it is a bugger to keep clean
  • I lived in Hawaii for 4yrs and it has become a habit to leave the slipas at the door. No shoes on our floors..We have a shoe rack at the front door for friends to put their shoes before entering the main house.:)
