I love this song. I think it's about the changes in American culture and politics. And the loss of respect that we used to have for our leaders along with the respect that is percieved to have been lost for family life. It also has some political type references that apply to the Reagan era.

I think it is about changes forced upon yourself that make you become cynical, both in family life and society.
